The network cost audit

How we teach teams to use a financial auditing app for network scaling cost audits without drowning in dashboards.

Start with what you pay, not what you monitor

Monitoring shows utilisation. Invoices show obligations. The audit begins where those two disagree: ports billed but idle, credits never applied, minimums that outlast traffic, and FX moves that look like “growth.”

In Hong Kong estates we often see cross-connect fees and meet-me room charges sitting outside the primary NMS export. Your app only helps if those lines are inventoried with the same discipline as circuits.

Four passes we teach

1

Inventory lock

Freeze a period, assign owners, and refuse unnamed line items. The auditing app becomes the ledger of record for that window.

2

Match and exception

Pair utilisation to billable units. Exceptions get a ticket-style finding—not a highlight colour that nobody owns.

3

Scaling hypothesis

State the trigger that would justify new spend, and the evidence that would falsify it.

4

Brief and cadence

One page for leadership, plus a calendar date for the next lock. Audits that never recur become folklore again.
